Product Description
Toshiba 35AF44 The 35-inch Toshiba 35AF44 FST PURE Flat direct-view CRT TV delivers a big, beautiful picture using several unique technologies to give you the best viewing experience. Toshiba's Flatter Squarer Tube (FST) significantly reduces screen curvature on the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal axis of the panel. The FST PURE Flat picture tube delivers increased viewing angles along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate, lifelike images. Additionally, unwanted reflections from room lighting are taken care of, and sharpness and brightness are improved. A 3-line digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction virtually eliminates dot crawl or cross-color interference--producing a superior picture. While digital comb filters improve the vertical edges of images, Vertical Contour Correction works with the comb filters to improve the horizontal edges for complete image enhancement. Color temperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The "Warm" setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased. The Black Level Expander increases the black threshold level, so blacks are pure black, not dark gray. This improved contrast makes the picture appear sharper and more three-dimensional.Toshiba's Advanced VSM (velocity scan modulation) improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, while the Invar shadow mask eliminates picture discoloration (doming) caused by heat and allows the tube to operate at a higher voltage, producing brighter whites, higher contrast, and purer colors. A 16:9 mode uses vertical compression to display content formatted for a widescreen. The 35AF44's double-baffle speaker design uses side-mounted, front-firing speakers to deliver the most stereo sound reproduction available from a television's inte

2 out of 5 stars Be prepared to spent $ fixing tv often   February 20, 2009
Kerrie L. Stemniski
We have had our tv for less than four years and are having to replace the bulb for the third time. TV is great when it works, but the bulbs go out often, ($150 a pop, minimum). Forget the warranty package. I can't even get anyone to pick up the phone. Message comes on stating they are closed, but call back later. Sadly, they don't say when they are open. I wouldn't recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Best Non HDTV I've ever seen   November 16, 2005

I'm a Profesional audio Video installer constantly installing the latest technologies from DLP, Plasma, LCD, and some CRT's and I bought this TV after the first time I saw it, as a DirecTV subscriber some programs although are not aired in HD you can definetly tell when a program was recorded in HD this TV looks fantastic, this technology is almost out but for those of us who don't have 2,3,4 thousand to spend on an HDTV I defintly recomend it over more expensive tv's including Sony's XBR. It's heavy but not as heavy as a Sony.

5 out of 5 stars Very good large screen TV   October 24, 2004

Although Toshiba lists this as a 35" TV the screen actually measures a full 36"; I know this because I just bought one and have measured it. I bought this TV because I wanted a good large screen TV with a very sharp picture at a reasonable price. Sharp pictures at reasonable prices are typical of Toshiba TVs, which may well be the best buys currently available.

Yes, this model -- despite it's sharp picture -- is not high-definition and it has the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio rather than a widescreen 16:9 ratio. But my cable system currently broadcasts 175 channels in the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio and only 9 widescreen high-definition channels. Widescreen 16:9 TVs have smaller pictures with gray bars on the side when displaying traditional 4:3 channels. Furthermore, because the screen on this TV is so large, when I watch letter-boxed widescreen DVDs the picture size is quite acceptable.

Widescreen high-definition broadcasts and widescreen high-definition TVs will be the norm in a few years, at which time the prices of such sets will be significantly lower than they are now. However, with the current situation where most channels still display traditional 4:3 pictures and only a few are in widescreen and high definition, a large screen 4:3 TV is a good economical choice for many people at this time.
